Why NOT THC?
CBD Guide
What is CBD?
CBD (Cannabidiol) is a phytocannabinoid compound derived from the cannabis plant. Originally discovered in 1940, it is one of 113 identified cannabinoids in cannabis plants and accounts for up to 40% of the plant’s extract. However, it is very different from the more commonly known tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is another compound found in the cannabis plant.
CBD doesn’t get you ‘high’.
It doesn’t have the same psychoactivity as THC, may reduce the adverse effects of THC (intoxication and sedation in particular) and as of 2019 clinical research into CBD included studies of anxiety, cognition, movement disorders, and pain.
Humans have an endocannabinoid system, which is a network of neurotransmitters vital for helping maintain homeostasis. It’s believed to help regulate a variety of functions, including sleep, memory, appetite, pain sensation and mood. The human body, just like the cannabis plant, both make cannabinoids. This means we are biologically programmed to be able to use CBD effectively to help reduce inflammation, pain and anxiety, and other health issues!
Is CBD Legal?
CBD is legal in the U.K. “provided it has been derived from an industrial hemp strain that is EU-approved,” or comes from outside the EU. ‘Hemp’ is a term often reserved for cannabis strains that are cultivated for non-drug use. Since 2018, CBD oil is legal to possess, buy, and sell in the UK, providing the product does not contain more than 0.2% THC (the controlled psychoactive cannabinoid).
How do I take CBD?
There are different ways of administering CBD into the body; including oil drops, capsules, soft gels, balms, and even chew toys for pets! CBD oil sprays are also available, used like breath spray, along with teas and flowers.
Oral drops, taken sublingually, are the most common, as they put you in control of the dosing. The biggest advantage with them is convenience, as you can apply a dose as and when you feel like it, and it will start working in minutes. Simply drop the oil under your tongue and let it sit for 30-60 seconds.
Please enquire about other ways of taking CBD that are not readily available, so we can work to cater to your needs.
What are the benefits of CBD?
There is growing evidence of CBD’s benefits, both pre-clinically and clinically. CBD has been shown to alleviate symptoms associated with epilepsy[1], anxiety, insomnia and chronic pain[3], as well as having anti-inflammatory properties. CBD oil is also pet friendly! Whilst there are no formal studies, dog owners have suggested it to treat pain as well as helping to control seizures in their animals. It is always advisable to check with your veterinarian first before administering anything to your pets, and to start with small amounts, and then closely monitor the effects.
What are the side effects of CBD?
No major side effects have been noted as a result of CBD use. Doses of up to 300mg/day have been used safely for up to 6 months and other studies showed harmless results over 4 weeks for, doses of 1200 to 1500 mg/day. Recent, larger studies with epileptic patients reported reduced appetite and diarrhoea as side effects.
What does full spectrum mean?
Full spectrum refers to CBD oils that still contain all phytochemicals naturally found in the plant, including cannabinoids, essential oils and terpenes. They are isolated in such a way that they have little to no THC (<0.3%). Despite these relatively low amounts, the overall composition is considered “full spectrum” and is synonymous with the “entourage effect” – which refers to the increased effectiveness of these products due to the different cannabinoids working synergistically. This combination allows the oil to be highly effective and long lasting. Full spectrum products are commonly considered more effective than products that are CBD isolate derived. Products that are isolate derived will only contain the isolated CBD molecule.
What CBD dosage should I take?
There is currently no set limit on how much CBD you should take. If you are new to using CBD, then we recommend you start with a low concentration, and/or low doses.
The FSA (Food Safety Association) recommends no more than 70mg/day.
If you are taking any medication and would like to try CBD, it is essential that you discuss with your physician first. Even if you aren’t taking medication, we would recommend consulting with your physician.
